About Gretna, Lousiana
Five miles south of New Orleans, across the Crescent City Connection bridge, lies the city of Gretna, LA. It is the seat of Jefferson Parish, LA. With a population of around 18,000 residents, this dense suburban area enjoys parks, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops.
History
In 1750, Jean de Pradel erected the plantation house, Monplaisir, on land that was home to the Houma and Chitimacha people. By 1815, Monplaisir was bought by John McDonough of New Orleans, who founded a settlement called McDonoughville, creating the first subdivision in Jefferson Parish.
In 1836, Mechanikham, LA, was settled by a wealthy landowner, Nicholas Noel Destrehan, whose family built (among other places) the Destrehan Plantation in Destrehan. Destrehan commissioned surveyor Benjamin Buisson to design a symmetrical plan that created a two-block wide settlement.
Mechanikham would become home to many German immigrants, and the German-American Cultural Center of Gretna was built in 1911 to chart the impact these immigrants had on the city.
In 1839, St Mary’s Market Steam Ferry Company bought a four-block-wide stretch downriver from Mechanikham. The company designed the streets in the same manner as Mechanikham, with a dedicated ferry landing that sailed from St Mary’s Market in New Orleans.
In 1913, Gretna, LA, was incorporated. It absorbed the section of McDonoughville that was in Jefferson Parish, and the settlement of Mechanikham.
Gretna Today
Gretna was named after the Scottish town of Gretna Green, thanks to a 19th-century judge who performed quick weddings. This tradition continues today every Valentine’s Day when a justice of the peace performs marriages and renewals over the anvil of the Gretna Green Blacksmith Shop.
The 20th century saw a considerable change in Gretna, LA. The Mississippi River Bridge opened in 1958 and transformed the demographics of the area. The quick and easy commute to New Orleans saw the population boom, and the southern part of the city flourished.
There is still a free pedestrian ferry that operates from New Orleans to Gretna’s historic downtown.
On Saturday mornings, the historic train depot site is transformed into a farmers market, where local artists display their work as part of the Gretna Art Walk.

The David Crocket Fire Co, No. 1, is home to the oldest continuously active volunteer fire company in Louisiana. It has been running since May 7, 1844.
Gretna is home to Louisiana’s most significant National Register of Historic Places districts, including The Kitty Strehle Home, which contains artifacts from the German Immigrant family who built it in the 1800s.
